Amelia Island is the last barrier island on the Atlantic coast of the United States. The island is approximately 2 1/2 miles wide by 14 miles long. To the west of Amelia Island is the Intracoastal Waterway and to the east is the Atlantic Ocean. The island received its name in 1735 to honor Princess Amelia, the sister of King George II of England. Throughout the centuries, eight flags have claimed sovereignty over this waterfront land, among them the Spanish, French, English, Mexican and American.
